Semi Permanent Brisbane 2010

After what seemed like an eternity of waiting for the Semi Permanent Brisbane Conference to roll around, it finally came to town last Friday, the 4th of June. Myself and a couple of mates (some of them being Semi-P virgins) made our way to the magical city of Brisbane and were super impressed with all of the speakers. For those who weren’t there, the show went something like this…

Louise Banister – Frankie Magazine
Puts lots of pictures of her friends and family in the magazine
I got HEAPS out of Louise’s presentation and it was probably one of the most beneficial for me personally. Louise talked about how Frankie came to be, from it’s conception to the massive mag it is now. She shared some great insight, experiences and lessons she, and others at the mag have learned over the years which I found really valuable.

MYMO
A room mate? No I’m pretty sure it’s not a room mate…
German street artist Mymo was a real surprise package, nothing what I expected. In my head I always thought Mymo was a dude and when this tiny lady jumped up on stage I was like “whoa, that’s awesome!”, or something like that. She went through both types of her work, graffiti and gallery art, and told us about her inspirations and processes. Looking at the work she presented, I think her graffiti and street art is much stronger than the stuff she is exhibiting, but that’s just me…

Toben
has mad-ass parties and 1 pixel penises
Toben were raaaaaaad. They took us for a bit of a journey, from their days in university as Sop (?) Collective to where they are now, explaining everything that happened along the way. They had a few really good pointers and hints for working as a collective which I happily took on board. I would happily have a mad ass party with them.

Stephen Dupont
Warning: Graphic Content
Holly bajesus. I don’t know how Stephen sleeps at night after seeing some of the photos and footage he has shot in Afghanistan over the years. It’s the sort of stuff you would never forget. Most of his presentation consisted of his short film ‘Generation AK’ which focused on the wars and battles going on over there between 1993 and 2009. When this film comes out I will let you know and you WILL go and see it.

Alexia Sinclair
Works for people who loooooove lions
Alexia was, in my opinion, the best presenter on the day. She took us through what she went through to get to where she is now, showing us her amazing work and sharing funny stories along the way. She also showed a great little time lapse video of her performing some photo retouching and digital, which was really cool.

Frost Design
Puts condoms on bananas The Frost Design presentation was pretty cool, but wasn’t my absolute fave from the day. The showcased work was great and inspiring as always but it felt like the presenter, whose name escapes me, was pretty nervous at the start and sort of lost me a little bit. I can fully understand why though, standing and presenting in front of a full auditorium would be a pretty daunting task.

Iloura
Gets emails from Tom Hanks
Until I saw the work Iloura did on the recent TV series, ‘The Pacific’, I never really realised how much 3D and special effects go into TV shows. I was totally gobsmacked at how well they integrate artificial effects into raw footage so seamlessly. I was also very impressed at how they were able to edit Baz Luhrmann out of the background in some scenes of the movie ‘Australia’…crazy guys those directors…

Jasper Goodall
Got his minotaur castrated and showed us the first illustration of tentacle sex
Jasper Goodall is a legend. He was my favourite artist presenting at SP and didn’t let me down. He talked about his time at college, his influences and inspiration, process and some of the clients he has worked with. His work is really inspiring to me and I love his illustrative style. He’s a pretty funny guy with heaps of LOL’s had during his presentation.

I’m getting a bit sick of writing now and it’s a beautiful day outside so I’m going to wrap it up quick. Semi Permanent was once again an effin good event and I can’t wait to head down to the Melbourne conference. Big ups to everyone involved in the set up and organisation, we all think you do an awesome job and really appreciate it :)
